Amidst the bustling cityscape, the Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery stands as a solemn tribute. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom. The Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery, established initially in 1955, has been relocated and renamed. It now resides within the serene Martyrs Park in Futian District. The imposing 27-meter monument captures your attention immediately. Etched upon it are the powerful words “Revolutionary Martyrs Are Immortal,” penned by Zeng Sheng himself, the commander of the Dongjiang Column.

The Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery is more than just a monument. It houses the remains and honors over 1,050 martyrs. These individuals dedicated their lives to the revolution, spanning from the resistance against Japanese aggression to the socialist construction era. A pavilion at the cemetery’s southwest corner bears their names, a testament to their bravery and commitment. Among them, 490 gave their lives during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Another 416 fell during the Chinese People’s War of Liberation. A further 65 perished during the Socialist Revolution and Socialist Construction, and 25 have died since the reform and opening-up period. The cemetery also serves as the final resting place for Zeng Sheng, a prominent figure in the fight for liberation. His contributions to the victory in the South China battlefield are deeply respected. His ashes were interred here in 1996, further solidifying the Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery’s significance. It’s a place where history whispers through the trees, where the echoes of past struggles resonate with every step.

Within the Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery, you’ll find a memorial hall dedicated to the Sanzhoutian Uprising. This pivotal event, led by Sun Yat-sen in 1900, marked the start of China’s democratic revolution. The sculptures of the five key participants stand as a tribute to their courage in challenging the Qing Dynasty. The uprising, which saw troops march from Huizhou to Shenzhen, played a crucial role in shaping modern China. The Shenzhen Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery is a place of remembrance. It’s a site that invites reflection on the sacrifices made in pursuit of a better future.
