Who is the revered Jhulelal? Let’s uncover the captivating tale of the Jhulelal Mandir in Mumbai. This beautiful temple, nestled within the Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri West, stands as a testament to the rich Sindhi heritage. Designed by the renowned temple architect Subhash Bhoite, who drew inspiration from the original Jhulelal Mandir in Sindh, Pakistan, this shrine pulsates with spiritual energy. Commissioned by Shree Swami Hiranandji Maharaj and supported by the Purshottam Lalsai Charitable Trust, the Jhulelal Mandir is a beacon of devotion. Inside, the main deity, Jhulelal, is depicted seated on a pala fish atop a lotus flower fountain, carved from pristine white Makrana marble. The temple also houses other deities, including Ganesh, Lakshmi Narayan, Ram Parivar, Radha Krishna, Sai Baba, Hanuman, Durga Mata, Shiv Parivar, and Kali Mata. A black Narmadeshwar Shiv linga sits before the Shiv Parivar statue. The temple’s interior, adorned with Makrana marble flooring, walls, and a luminous ceiling, exudes an aura of serenity. The exterior, crafted from red sandstone and white marble jali, presents a striking contrast. A pala fish statue guards the entrance, beneath a red sandstone Chhatri. Statues of Shree Purshottam Maharaj and Shree Umeshji Maharaj flank Jhulelal within the Chhatri. Jhulelal, also known as Lal Sai, Uderolal, Varun Dev, Doolhalal, and Zinda Pir, is the community god of the Sindhis. Legend traces his origins to 10th-century Sindh, under the tyrannical rule of Mirkshah. Mirkshah demanded that Hindus convert to Islam or face death. In their despair, the Hindus prayed to Varun Dev, the Water God. Varun Dev promised to be born as a mortal to save them. He was born to Mata Devki and Ratanchand Lohano, hailed by miracles and named Uderolal. Uderolal grew up performing miracles. One day, Mirkshah, still insistent on conversion, met with Uderolal. Uderolal proclaimed the oneness of God, regardless of name. Mirkshah, enraged, ordered his arrest. Suddenly, water and fire engulfed the palace. Uderolal offered Mirkshah a chance to reconsider. Terrified, Mirkshah relented, agreeing to treat all faiths equally. The Jhulelal Mandir, with its serene ambiance and the presence of Swami Hiranandji Maharaj, draws devotees from across India. It stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of faith, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Sindhi community.
