In 1704, a simple Quaker by the name of Robert Jones established a humble inn along the bustling Lancaster Road. Little did he know, his Wayside Inn, later known as the General Wayne Inn, would become a stage for history, intrigue, and spectral tales. The General Wayne Inn stands before you, its current stucco and paint concealing the original stone and timber. Imagine this place in the 1700s, a handsome three-story building in the style of an English coaching inn. Picture weary travelers finding respite within its walls. Large fireplaces warmed the main dining room, where fine linen adorned wooden tables under the glow of chandeliers. Upstairs, small sleeping rooms offered rest, while an overhanging porch provided rocking chairs for relaxation. This very ground witnessed the footsteps of revolutionaries, from General George Washington to the Marquis de Lafayette. British Redcoats and Hessian soldiers also frequented the inn, adding to its colorful tapestry of patrons. During the 19th century, Philadelphians flocked to the General Wayne Inn for vacation getaways. They indulged in delicacies like Squirrel Ragout and Pigeon Stew. Even Edgar Allan Poe graced the inn with his presence, even scratching his initials onto a windowpane, a mark sadly lost to time. But the General Wayne Inn holds more than just historical significance. It whispers of ghostly encounters. In 1972, a séance revealed a host of resident spirits. Wilhelm, a Hessian soldier, lamented his missing uniform. A little boy cried for his mother. Two young women, Sara and Sadie, worried over lost rugs. Other Hessian soldiers and even a Native American or Afro-American spirit also made their presence known. Over the years, the inn’s spectral inhabitants continued to make themselves known, blowing on the necks of bar patrons, startling employees in the cellar, and even causing mischief with the office adding machine. A cannonball mysteriously rolled across the floor, only to vanish into thin air. A mysterious man in period clothing mingled at a party, unrecognized by the host. Even a tragic murder in 1996 added another layer of intrigue to the inn’s story. Today, the General Wayne Inn has been reborn as the Chabad Center for Jewish Life. Though renovated and repurposed, it still carries the weight of its past, the echoes of history and ghostly whispers mingling within its walls.
