Fancy a peek into a treasure chest of Spanish illustration? Right here before us stands the Museo ABC. It is not just another museum. The Museo ABC is a vibrant space where over a century of graphic art comes to life.

Once upon a time this building was Madrid’s first Mahou beer factory in 1891. Architects Francisco Andrés Octavio Palacios and José López Sallaberry designed it. Sallaberry helped shape Madrid’s urban landscape. He moved the Cibeles fountain. He also helped design the Gran Vía.

Later the Fundacíon Colección ABC transformed the old factory. They created an innovative space for art. The Museo ABC opened its doors in November 2010. It quickly became a cultural hub. The museum unfortunately had to temporarily close due to the COVID19 pandemic. It has since reopened sharing its space with the Clara del Rey Cultural Center.

Inside the Museo ABC spans over 3800 square meters. The area spreads across six floors. Two floors are even underground. You will find two large exhibition halls. There are also multifunctional spaces. These are used for classrooms and workshops.

The heart of the Museo ABC is its collection. It started in 1891. The collection features drawings and illustrations. These works first appeared in Blanco y Negro magazine. Later they were also in the ABC newspaper. The collection now includes nearly 150000 works. These pieces represent 1500 artists.

The Museo ABC preserves and promotes this legacy. It showcases art from different styles and techniques. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions. These exhibitions often highlight contemporary artists. María Hesse and Lorenzo Goñi have been featured.

Stepping inside is like entering a time capsule. You can see the evolution of graphic art. The Museo ABC is not just a museum. It celebrates Spanish culture and creativity. The building itself is a work of art. Its original architecture blends seamlessly with modern design.

Notice the Neo-Mudejar facade with exposed brick. This style was common for industrial buildings in Madrid. The building’s history adds another layer to the experience.

The Museo ABC is more than just a place to view art. It is a dynamic center that engages with the community. It offers a range of activities and events. The goal is to promote and revalue drawing and illustration.

Before we move on take one last look at the Museo ABC. Consider its impact on Madrid’s cultural scene. It is a testament to the power of art. It also highlights the importance of preserving our artistic heritage.
