Hidden within Bloomfield, New Jersey, stands the Brookdale Baptist Church. It has quietly witnessed the passage of time since the 1890s. Officially incorporated in July 1895, Brookdale Baptist Church wasn’t always the edifice you see today. Its story intertwines with the very fabric of the community, reflecting the evolving landscape of faith and fellowship. Brookdale Baptist Church’s constitution proclaims its dedication to the “whole Bible as the inspired Word of God.” It seeks to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and nurture its members’ faith. The church’s mission extends beyond its walls, aiming to aid mission work and bring those seeking faith into the fold. In the summer of 1987, Brookdale Baptist Church launched a unique initiative. The Adventure Day Camp, a program designed for grade school children, aimed to blend biblical teachings with the joys of summer. The camp’s handbook explicitly stated its goal: “The ultimate goal of Adventure Day Camp is the integration of Bible truth into the lives of campers.” Activities were carefully crafted to intertwine formal and informal teaching methods. Formal instruction involved sharing God’s word. Informal learning took place through everyday interactions, modeling biblical principles in the context of crafts, games, and outdoor adventures. While the camp welcomed children from all backgrounds, the underlying purpose remained rooted in the church’s religious mission. The camp was designed to be more than just a summer pastime. It was an extension of the church’s commitment to nurturing faith. This commitment is evidenced in a letter sent to parents, emphasizing that campers would be learning the “Word of God.” Even the seemingly secular activities, like crafts and games, were seen as opportunities to instill biblical values. While the camp charged a nominal fee, it wasn’t a money-making venture. The funds collected went directly back into supporting the program. The church’s focus remained on its mission, not on generating profit. The Brookdale Baptist Church’s story continues to unfold, woven into the lives of those it touches.
