Did you ever imagine a school surrounded by squatter settlements? Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pantai, nestled in Kampung Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur, has a history intertwined with its humble beginnings. Originally named Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Kampung Kerinchi in 1967, it was later renamed Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pantai in 1973. This name change, suggested by the headmaster, En. Mokhtar b. Zakaria, reflects the school’s location near Lembah Pantai, Pantai Dalam, and Pantai Baru. The school was initially surrounded by these settlements, a stark contrast to the developing city around it. Over time, these settlements were replaced with public housing. Imagine teachers climbing a hill to reach the school because there was no proper access road. They parked their cars by the Federal Highway and hiked up. The school began with only three blocks housing 16 classrooms. In 1972, due to increasing student numbers, afternoon sessions were introduced. This same year, the first batch of students sat for the MCE examination. The school’s first magazine, titled ‘Mastika’, was published just four years after its establishment. By 1982, two more blocks were added. These housed a library, science labs, and workshops. A resource room, dental clinic, bookstore, and multipurpose room followed in 1984, located in Block B. Today, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pantai boasts six blocks dedicated to learning and specialized rooms. A significant event in the school’s history was the launch of its History Gallery on April 18, 2011. This gallery, inaugurated by Dato’ Ibrahim Bin Ismail, the Director-General of the National Museum of Malaysia, has attracted visitors from both within Malaysia and abroad. It even serves as a benchmark for the Malaysian School History Association in Kuala Lumpur. Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pantai also offered Form Six classes starting in 1989. However, these classes were moved to SMK Vivekananda in Bricksfields at the end of 2016. Despite the challenges and changes, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Pantai continues to serve the community, providing quality education to students from diverse backgrounds. The school has even been recognized for its achievements, receiving awards for improvements in academic performance. From humble beginnings on a hill, it stands as a testament to the power of education and community.
