Ever wonder where success, honor, and spirit come together? They converge right here at Spring Woods High School. Established in 1964, Spring Woods High School has a rich history in Houston’s Spring Branch district. The school was founded to handle the growing population in Houston’s western suburbs.
Spring Woods High School sits on the former grounds of the Spring Branch Country Club. Imagine students walking the same paths where golf carts once roamed. Spring Woods opened around the same time as Spring Oaks Junior High and Westwood Elementary School. These schools were built on the same former golf course.
The Spring Woods High School campus has been expanded and renovated many times. Its courtyards face inwards with open passages. This design differs from the newer Northbrook High School and Stratford High School.
Spring Woods High School’s mascot is Tuffy the Tiger. Since the 1960s, Tuffy has been a symbol of school spirit. In the early 80s, the first female student wore the Tuffy costume. Sometimes Tuffy is joined by Tilly the Tiger and Baby Tiger.
Spring Woods High School offers many specialized programs. Students can explore health occupations, future teaching, and even rocket design. The school also has strong debate and UIL academic teams. An in-house broadcasting program lets students work on real-world projects.
The co-curricular program at Spring Woods includes award-winning fine arts. The school has state-of-the-art facilities for band, orchestra, choir, art, theater, and dance. Students can also join academic and special interest clubs plus the National Honor Society and student government.
Spring Woods High School offers UIL-sponsored athletic programs. These include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Several elementary and middle schools feed into Spring Woods. These include Shadow Oaks, Spring Branch, Westwood, Woodview, and parts of Pine Shadows, Sherwood, and Terrace Elementary Schools. Also, parts of Spring Branch Middle School, Spring Oaks Middle School, and Spring Woods Middle School.
Spring Woods High School has many notable alumni. Roger Clemens played baseball for the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Astros. Beth Moore is a bestselling author and Bible teacher. Ted Poe served as a U.S. Representative.
