What began as a dream is now Mount Sinai Baptist Church. This church has a rich history. It has overcome many challenges.
Mount Sinai Baptist Church’s exact age is unknown. Oral tradition says the church started as a dream. Someone wanted to help his fellow man. This person organized a group to worship God. They decided on a place of worship called Curry Branch. The records do not say how long Curry Branch was used.
As time passed, the meeting place moved. The new location was Posey Land. A Brush Harbor was started. Then a House of Worship was constructed. Services were held there for years. After a while, services were disrupted. God sent G. P. Seigler. He offered a site for the House of Worship. It would be free from interference. The House of Worship was erected. Services were held on the fourth Sunday of each month.
The dates of these events are unknown. Records have been lost. But the church was likely named Mount Sinai back then. Some of the first pastors were Reverends Gregory, Sprouse, and Key.
After several years, the church was destroyed by fire. Most members scattered. A few faithful members remained. They wanted to worship God despite the fire. They continued to hold services. Reverend A. Bettis organized the Mount Canaan Association. It included Mount Sinai.
With technology, more information was found. A computer search found a Church Records Form. It was from 1936. It showed the church was organized in 1882. In 1903, the church was destroyed by fire. Only seven members remained. Each member gave $12 to buy lumber. With a carpenter’s help, they rebuilt the church.
On May 25, 1966, a descendant of George Preston Seigler signed a deed. It was for the land where the church was built. This deed was recorded on June 9, 1967.
In 1969, Reverend Ernest M. Gordon became pastor. He succeeded Reverend Sabe Jefferson. In 1970, the church was destroyed by fire again. The church stayed together. Services were held in the old Mt. Sinai School. Members rebuilt the church. It was dedicated on January 27, 1974. The cornerstone was erected on May 20, 1982. It reads “Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, established in 1886, destroyed by fire 1970, rebuilt in 1974, Pastor – Rev. E.M. Gordon.”
Mount Sinai Baptist Church was built on a strong foundation. The members have faith in God. Its mission is to serve God. It also aims to spread the good news. It wants to bring souls to Christ.
Another Mount Sinai Baptist Church is located in Brooklyn. It was established in 1919. Its senior clergy is Rev. Dr. Curtis Whitney.
Yet another Mount Sinai Baptist Church exists. It has served its community for 117 years. It has survived many challenges. In 2017, a fire caused damage. In 2020, another fire caused more damage. The church continues to embrace its beliefs.
