Whose whispers echo around the Calvary Episcopal Church Plaque? This plaque marks the original site of Calvary Episcopal Church. It signifies a powerful story of resilience, faith, and community. Calvary Episcopal Church was founded in 1847. It served as a sanctuary for enslaved and free African Americans in Charleston. The church’s first service was held in the basement of St. Philip’s parsonage. Later, services moved to Temperance Hall on Meeting Street. Construction of the church building began in 1849. However, a riot at the nearby Work House nearly derailed the project. A mob threatened to destroy the almost-completed church. James L. Petigru, a Charleston lawyer, bravely intervened and saved the building. Calvary Episcopal Church was finally consecrated on December 23, 1849. The church thrived for nearly a century. It became a vital center for Charleston’s Black community. It housed a popular Sunday School and even a kindergarten. The kindergarten, started by Father E. L. Baskerville, provided crucial early childhood education for many African American children. Ironically, the church’s location ultimately led to its demise. The surrounding neighborhood demographics shifted. The Robert Mills Manor housing project, intended for white residents, enveloped the church. Under pressure, the congregation relocated to Line and Percy Streets in 1940. The original Calvary Episcopal Church building was later demolished. The Calvary Episcopal Church Plaque now stands as a solemn reminder of this lost landmark. It evokes the spirit of those who worshipped within its walls. Their legacy of faith continues to resonate in the heart of Charleston.
