“A marvel of engineering” someone once said. We stand before the Osthafenbrücke a testament to modern bridge design. This isn’t just any bridge. The Osthafenbrücke connects Frankfurt’s Ostend to Sachsenhausen. It spans the Main River linking vibrant neighborhoods.

The Osthafenbrücke wasn’t always here. Plans for a bridge at this location date back to 1907. These initial plans were shelved. They were abandoned after the completion of the Osthafen harbor in 1912. The need for a new crossing resurfaced. This was part of the 2004 Master Transportation Plan. The plan included the redevelopment of the former wholesale market area. The area was becoming the site of the European Central Bank.

The Osthafenbrücke’s design won a competition. The winning design was by architect Ferdinand Heide and the engineering firm BGS. They created a steel arch bridge. It’s a Nielsen bridge. This is a type of bridge without intermediate piers. The winning design features a remarkable 175 meter main span. It also boasts a unique arrangement of crossed hangers.

Construction began on September 12 2011. The total cost of the project was nearly 42 million Euros. The 2200 ton steel structure was assembled on land. Then it was carefully floated into its final position in August 2012. The Osthafenbrücke opened on December 10 2013. This was a major event. It was opened by Frankfurt’s mayor Peter Feldmann. It also included Horst Schneider and traffic councilor Stefan Majer.

The Osthafenbrücke is more than just a means of transport. It serves as a symbol of Frankfurt’s progress. It’s a vital link in the city’s infrastructure. It is a breathtaking example of modern engineering. The bridge handled approximately 17000 vehicles daily by 2015. The bridge also contains pedestrian and cyclist paths. Take a moment to appreciate the elegant curves and the way it gracefully arcs over the Main. This bridge is a symbol of Frankfurt’s innovative spirit. The Osthafenbrücke stands as a powerful illustration of how engineering can be both functional and beautiful.
