Hidden within the vibrant Koukaki neighborhood of Athens, Zacharitsa stands as a testament to the city’s ever-evolving spirit. Zacharitsa isn’t just a building. It’s a story waiting to be told, a blend of past and present woven into the very fabric of its walls. Originally built in 1979 as a typical post-war polykatoikia, or apartment building, Zacharitsa housed a craftswoman who filled its rooms with the delicate artistry of wedding and christening crafts. Imagine the soft clinking of beads, the rustle of fabrics, and the gentle hum of creativity that once echoed within these walls. Years later, the architectural firms Molonglo and Royffe.Flynn embarked on a transformative journey, breathing new life into Zacharitsa. Their vision was not to erase the past but to honor it, merging the building’s original character with modern sensibilities. Zacharitsa is a hybrid space, encompassing a home, workshop, and potential exhibition or shop area, all within 86 square meters. The original steel spiral staircase, a graceful helix connecting the three levels, remains a striking centerpiece. The cool touch of marble window sills and the mosaic patterns of terrazzo floors have been preserved. New terrazzo and reclaimed marble tiles, pieced together like a colorful puzzle, complement the old. The kitchen, a space designed for both culinary creation and creative endeavors, boasts a reclaimed marble workbench and sink, resting atop sturdy brickwork and textured concrete cast on-site. Descend to the subterranean bathroom, a sanctuary of relaxation where a sleek concrete bath is nestled among a patchwork of old and new marble tiles. Picture yourself soaking in the warm water, surrounded by the smooth textures and the soft glow of light filtering through the space. Zacharitsa invites you to step into its story, to experience the seamless blend of history and modernity. It’s a place where the echoes of a craftswoman’s past mingle with the fresh energy of contemporary design. Zacharitsa in Koukaki isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to Athens’s enduring spirit of reinvention.
