Can you imagine a mosque built by the Spanish? It may sound odd, but here it is, right before your eyes: the Mosqué Jemma Bouzafar. This majestic building, perched high on a hill overlooking Chefchaouen, tells a story that’s woven into the very fabric of this city. It was erected by the Spanish during their colonial rule, a gesture to win over the local population. However, the locals had other plans. They saw it as a symbol of foreign domination, a reminder of their loss of independence. They rejected the mosque, refusing to pray within its walls. The mosque stood largely abandoned, a silent testament to the clash of cultures. It was a strategic move by the Spanish, aiming to win over the hearts of the locals through a familiar symbol of faith. But the people of Chefchaouen weren’t easily swayed. They held onto their traditions, their culture, and their beliefs. Eventually, after the Spanish left, the Mosqué Jemma Bouzafar fell into disrepair. It was only in 2007 that the city authorities decided to renovate it. They saw in it a chance to attract tourists, and the hilltop location offered breathtaking views of Chefchaouen. Today, visitors can climb the hill to view the mosque and also enjoy the sweeping panoramas of the city below. The Mosqué Jemma Bouzafar may have never fulfilled its intended purpose as a house of worship, but it’s a powerful reminder of the complex history of Chefchaouen, a city where tradition and change intertwine.
