Grace Church Cathedral became the diocesan cathedral of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina in 2015. Before that, it was Grace Episcopal Church. It has been a significant landmark in Charleston since its founding in 1846.

The story of Grace Church Cathedral begins in the mid-19th century. The city needed a new Episcopal congregation. Edward Brickell White designed the Gothic Revival church. Construction finished in 1848. E. W. Brown was the contractor. Its architecture reflects a commitment to beauty and spiritual aspiration.

During the American Civil War, Grace Church Cathedral faced hardship. A shell struck it in January 1864. The church closed but reopened the following year. It was the first Episcopal church to reopen in the city after the war.

Local tradition says that a Union commander ordered the Reverend Charles Cotesworth Pinckney to pray for the president of the United States. Union soldiers stood at attention. Pinckney replied that he would gladly obey. He knew of no one who needed praying for more than the president of the United States.

The church suffered damage from an earthquake in 1886. A hurricane damaged it in 1911. Hurricane Hugo damaged it again in 1989. Each time, Grace Church Cathedral was restored.

Charleston’s restoration architect Albert Simons once remarked on the steeple of Grace Episcopal Church. He noted that its successive pinnacles recalled the steeple of St. Mary the Virgin on High Street in Oxford.

In November 2015, Grace Church became the diocesan cathedral. Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury, presented a Canterbury cross in April 2016. Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry attended the special service.

Grace Church Cathedral is more than a beautiful building. It is involved in many outreach initiatives. These include Community Supper, Episcopal Relief and Development, and Kairos Prison Ministry. They also support Memminger School, HALOS, and Seafarers. Fisher House, FreshStart, and Meals on Wheels are other ministries.
