Deep beneath the bustling streets of Guangzhou lies Yuzhu Metro Depot. A hidden world of gleaming rails and slumbering trains. This isn’t just any depot. It’s a vital artery pumping life into Guangzhou’s extensive metro system.

Yuzhu Metro Depot’s story begins in 2009. Line 5 opened its doors. This marked a significant milestone for Guangzhou’s public transport. But the depot was already planning for the future. Line 13’s integration was already envisioned.

Initially Line 13 was planned to use smaller Type L metro cars. This would have been consistent with Line 5’s design. However things changed. Overcrowding on routes using the smaller Type L cars became a serious concern. A decision was made. Line 13 would be upgraded. It would use larger high capacity 8-car Type A trains.

This upgrade presented a significant challenge for Yuzhu Depot. The platforms had to be extended southward. Platform heights had to be adjusted. This was a major undertaking during the ongoing Phase I construction of Line 13. The depot’s engineers and construction crews worked tirelessly. They completed this modification. Line 13 opened in 2017. Yuzhu Depot was ready.

Yuzhu Metro Depot continues to evolve. Phase II of Line 13 is planned. This extension will reach the heart of Guangzhou. It will terminate at Chaoyang station. A new yard for Line 13 is under construction. It’s being built next to the existing Line 5 yard. This expansion reflects Guangzhou’s relentless growth. It highlights the depot’s crucial role in the city’s future.

High-speed Line 28 is also projected to serve Yuzhu Depot. This is still in the planning stages. No timeline has been announced yet. But the possibilities are exciting. Yuzhu’s influence on Guangzhou’s transport network will only grow.

Yuzhu Metro Depot is more than just a place for trains. It’s a symbol of Guangzhou’s ambition and vision. It represents the city’s dedication to efficient and modern transportation. It’s a silent giant beneath the city. It powers the daily lives of millions. Next time you travel on Guangzhou’s metro remember the unseen workings of Yuzhu Depot.
