Legend says that in the 10th century Galician knights and light infantry camped near Sobreira. The battles between Christians and Moors were fierce. Bishop D Nonego of Porto built a fortress in Vandoma for defense. This marked the beginning of Moorish defeats. The troops named the settlements where they camped. Pinho Leal wrote that Gascon troops camped overlooking the right bank of the Douro River. This settlement is now part of Sobreira. This contradicts Leal’s description of Sobreira’s location.
