Founded in 1934 by the Venerable Thích Nữ Liễu Tường. Pháp Vô Cổ Tự began as a small thatched hut. Nestled beside the Nhà Bè River it was a simple structure. Over time the temple grew. It expanded thanks to the contributions of Buddhist devotees from Bùi Thị Da and Bùi Thị Tố.
Through the years Pháp Vô Cổ Tự underwent many renovations. The most significant occurred in 2007. Venerable Thích Nữ Như Thảo spearheaded this project. The renovation cost over 327 million đồng. It transformed the temple. It’s now a grand structure. A beautiful place of worship. By 2010 the renovations were complete.
The temple’s architecture is traditional. It embodies the style of Southern Vietnam. The temple’s main pillars are made of lim wood. This wood is very old. It’s over 150 years old. The wood came from a very old house in Hà Tây. Today it is Hanoi. The curved rooflines of Pháp Vô Cổ Tự are iconic. They are a feature of traditional Vietnamese temples.
Within Pháp Vô Cổ Tự you’ll find several notable structures. The main sanctuary is the heart of the temple. The main sanctuary houses statues of Buddha and other deities. The lecture hall is where Dharma talks are given. The East and West wings frame a peaceful courtyard. They are made of traditional Tau bricks.
Pháp Vô Cổ Tự is more than just a place of worship. It’s a place for community. It hosts various events. It holds ceremonies like Vu Lan and Phật Đản. The temple also serves as a refuge for nearly 100 orphans. These children are cared for by the nuns. The temple also participates in many charitable activities. It provides aid to the poor and needy.
