Originally called Mount Sinai School of Medicine, it adopted its current name in 2012, thanks to a generous $200 million grant from businessman Carl Icahn. The first classes commenced in 1968 with a small but dedicated group of students: 36 first-year MD students, 23 third-year students, and 19 graduate students. Today, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai boasts over 560 MD students, 90 MD/PhD students, and 270 PhD students, a testament to its growth and reputation.
