Did you know that the Church of Pentecost started with just a small group of believers? Right here in Accra stands a testament to faith and perseverance. This is the Church of Pentecost. Its story is one of growth, splits, and a commitment to spreading its message across the globe.

The Church of Pentecost has its roots in the late 1930s. It began with James McKeown, an Irish missionary. He arrived in the Gold Coast, now Ghana, in 1937. McKeown was sent by the Apostolic Church in the United Kingdom. His mission was to support a group of believers led by Rev. Peter Newman in Asamankese.

These believers adhered to specific doctrines. One core belief was divine healing through faith. A crisis emerged when Pastor James McKeown contracted malaria. According to their principles, he was expected to rely solely on his faith for healing. However, his condition worsened. He was then taken to a European hospital in Accra for treatment.

Upon his recovery, McKeown faced opposition. Leaders felt he had violated their principles by seeking medical attention. This difference in opinion led to a significant split. In 1939, the group divided into the Christ Apostolic Church and the Apostolic Church Gold Coast.

Under McKeown’s leadership, the Apostolic Church Gold Coast experienced remarkable expansion. A constitutional crisis in 1953 led to the founding of the Gold Coast Apostolic Church. As Ghana gained independence in 1957, the church was renamed the Ghana Apostolic Church.

Conflicts persisted even after the split and independence. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, then President of Ghana, intervened. He advised the church to adopt a new name to promote peace. Thus, on August 1, 1962, the Church of Pentecost was legally established.

The Church of Pentecost grew tremendously. It now operates in over 151 nations. Its headquarters remain in Accra. The church has over 4 million members worldwide. This includes a large number of children. The Church of Pentecost also has many ordained ministers serving in various countries.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye currently leads the Church of Pentecost. He was re-elected as chairman in May 2023. The Church of Pentecost continues to expand. It establishes churches and impacts communities worldwide. It welcomes all to join its mission.

Today, the Church of Pentecost stands as a symbol. It shows dedication, growth, and global impact. Its history is a testament to the power of faith. It also highlights the ability to adapt. It started small but has grown into a global movement. Remember its humble beginnings as you stand here. Think of the millions it has touched around the world.
