Hidden within Berlin’s Friedrichshain district stands St Antoniuskirche a testament to faith and resilience. This unassuming church at Rüdersdorfer Straße holds a surprisingly rich history. Initially built not as a church but as the Leo Hospice in 1897-98. It was designed by Hermann Bunning for Catholic immigrants. Many of these newcomers came from eastern European countries. Berlin at the time was predominantly Protestant. The hospice aimed to provide a welcoming space. This helped Catholic newcomers settle into their new lives in Berlin.

The hospice’s choir served as a chapel. It could be expanded with a folding wall to accommodate a large multi-purpose hall. This chapel was dedicated to St Anthony of Padua a Franciscan saint. The newly formed St Antonius parish eventually became the building’s owner. In 1909 the hospice closed. The multi-purpose hall was transformed into a church. An altar was installed on the narrow north side. Later in the 1920s architects Wilhelm Fahlbusch and Heinrich Schelhasse renovated the church.

World War II brought damage. Bombs hit St Antoniuskirche. Despite the devastation the church was reconsecrated in 1952. A significant change occurred in 1970. An eleven-story apartment building was constructed on Rüdersdorfer Straße. This building obscured the church. It also required the removal of the house in front of the church. This left St Antoniuskirche less accessible and partially hidden from the street. The church’s interior was altered to replace lost space. The altar now stands against the east wall. Alfons Bittner designed twelve stained-glass windows adding beauty and color to the interior.

Over the years St Antoniuskirche has been part of several parish mergers. In 2003 it merged with St Pius to form the St Antonius parish. However St Pius served as the main church. A further merger with St Mauritius occurred on January 1 2022 resulting in the St Mauritius parish. The church is now part of the Berlin Friedrichshain Lichtenberg pastoral area a testament to its enduring presence in the community. Today St Antoniuskirche continues its mission as a place of worship and a significant piece of Berlin’s history. Its story is one of adaptation change and the enduring power of faith.
