Ever wonder where legends are made? That place is Hampden Park. Right here in Glasgow. This isn’t just a stadium, it’s the beating heart of Scottish football. A place where dreams soar and history is written.

Hampden Park’s story stretches back to the late 19th century. Queen’s Park, a local team, needed a home. Their first ground, also called Hampden Park, opened in 1873. It even hosted the first Scottish Cup Final in 1874.

But progress marched on. The Caledonian Railway wanted to build a line right through the ground. So, Queen’s Park moved to a new site, a bit further east. This became the second Hampden Park.

By the late 1890s, Queen’s Park needed more space. Their landlords refused. Undeterred, they acquired a new site in 1899. This is where the present Hampden Park stands today.

Opened in 1903, Hampden Park quickly became the home of Scottish football. Scotland has played here since 1906. Its vast terraces saw world record attendances between the 1900s and 1930s. Even in 1970, Hampden Park set a UEFA record. It hosted over 136,000 fans for a European Cup semi-final between Celtic and Leeds United.

Hampden continued as Scotland’s main stadium until the early 1990s. Modern safety rules demanded redevelopment. Ibrox Park and Pittodrie Stadium hosted some World Cup qualifiers during this time. Hampden Park reopened in 1994, but closed again for further work. The south stand was replaced.

The fully redeveloped Hampden Park reopened in 1999. It hosted Euro 2000 qualifiers, including a play-off against England. Since then, Hampden has hosted almost all of Scotland’s competitive matches. Friendlies sometimes go to smaller venues like Pittodrie or Easter Road.

In 2014, Hampden Park was transformed for the Commonwealth Games. It hosted the athletics events, a temporary change of use. The Scottish Football Association’s lease on Hampden Park was expiring in 2020. There was talk of Celtic Park, Ibrox, or Murrayfield becoming the new home of the national team. But in 2018, the SFA announced they would buy Hampden Park from Queen’s Park. The deal completed in 2020. Hampden Park also became the regular home for the Scotland women’s team in 2021.

Hampden Park isn’t just about football. It hosted the 1960 European Cup final. Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3. Over 130,000 people were there. Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League final here in 2002. Zinedine Zidane scored his legendary “wonder goal”. Sevilla beat Espanyol in the 2007 UEFA Cup Final. Even American football has graced this pitch. The Scottish Claymores played here from 1998 to 2004.

Consider this: Diego Maradona made his international debut at Hampden Park and scored. Robbie Williams’ concert in 2006 forced Scotland to play a Euro 2008 qualifier at Celtic Park.

Today, Hampden Park continues to inspire. It stands as a testament to the enduring passion for football in Scotland. A place where memories are forged and legends are born. Hampden Park is more than a stadium. It’s a national icon.
