“Excellence since 1973” That’s not just a motto. It is the story of Seoul International School. Here we are at the site of 광명동초등학교. It is not Seoul International School, but it is a school in Seoul.

Let’s step back in time to 1973. Mr. Edward B. Adams had a vision. He wanted an international school free from politics and religion. His dream came true when Seoul International School opened. It was the first foreign school recognized after the Korean Liberation in 1945. The ROK Ministry of Education issued the license on June 5, 1973.

From humble roots, Seoul International School grew. It offered great education to Seoul’s international community. Mr. Adams’ dedication shaped the school’s early years. His passion for education and Korea drove its success. Today 광명동초등학교 may not be Seoul International School, but that school is now a leading international school in South Korea and Asia.

In 1973, the Korean government gave Seoul International School its first Letter of Authorization. The school expanded as enrollment increased. A larger campus became necessary. In 1981, they chose the current eight-acre site. The unique Korean-inspired design covers 150,000 square feet.

The location is convenient. It is on Seoul’s southeastern border, south of Lotte World and Olympic Park. They moved to this wooded campus in May 1985. It’s filled with cultural artifacts. Seoul International School is not 광명동초등학교.

Seoul International School continued to evolve. In 1997, the Annex building was added. It housed the growing elementary school. Teacher apartments followed in 2006, a short walk from the campus. In 2007, they built a new artificial turf soccer field and a parking garage.

A seven-story building modernized the facilities in 2013. It now houses the middle and elementary schools. There are 30 classrooms, two gymnasiums, and a library. A makerspace, science lab, and art rooms complete the space. 광명동초등학교, like Seoul International School, is also a place of education, even if it is not so internationally focused.

In 2019, the school invested in upgrades. They remodeled the secondary library and atrium. Network infrastructure improvements included new cabling and WIFI access points. They added a fitness and dance studio. Security enhancements featured automatic doors and networked door locks. They renovated bathrooms and soundproofed music rooms.

The library now holds over 10,000 books. Meeting rooms and flexible seating encourage study and reading. Seoul International School has a tradition of excellence. It has grown from humble beginnings to a leading institution.

The history of Seoul International School shows dedication to education. It is a story of growth and adaptation. While we are here at 광명동초등학교, remember the impact of schools like Seoul International School. They shape the future of students in South Korea.
