“Did you know that this building the Eyring Chemistry Building is named after one of Utah’s most distinguished scientists Henry Eyring? This isn’t just a chemistry building it’s a monument to a remarkable life.
Henry Eyring’s journey began far from Salt Lake City. Born in Colonia Juarez Mexico in 1901 his father was a wealthy rancher. Young Henry was an accomplished horseman by age three. The family’s life changed dramatically with the Mexican Revolution. Forced to leave their ranch they faced financial hardship. At eleven Henry took his first job a cash boy earning just $2.00 a week.
Despite these challenges Henry excelled. His talents in math and science were evident. His high school science teacher recognized his potential urging him to study engineering at the University of Arizona. He worked hard even waiting tables to send money home. He earned a degree in mining engineering then continued his education pursuing a master’s degree in metallurgy. His work in a copper mine and smelter exposed him to the dangers of mining and industrial chemicals. This experience shaped his future career.
He went on to earn a PhD in chemistry at UC Berkeley. His thesis work involved measuring the stopping power of gases for alpha particles. This groundbreaking research demonstrated that the stopping power of gases is nearly independent of chemical bonding. He continued his research and teaching at several prestigious universities.
In 1946 Henry and his family moved to Salt Lake City. His wife Mildred wanted to return to her family and the mountains of Utah. He joined the faculty at the University of Utah where he became Dean of the Graduate School. His contributions to theoretical chemistry were immense. He developed the Eyring activated complex theory a cornerstone of modern chemistry textbooks. A unique symbol the double-dagger or Cross of Lorraine became universally used in chemistry literature thanks to a typing error by his secretary.
Henry Eyring’s legacy extends beyond his scientific achievements. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He believed in the importance of seeking knowledge. In his book The Faith of a Scientist he connected faith and the pursuit of scientific truth. He remained active and athletic well into his later years.
In 1980 this building was dedicated to Henry Eyring a fitting tribute to a man described as not just a professor but a college in himself. He died in 1981 leaving behind an incredible legacy. This building stands as a testament to his brilliance his determination and his profound impact on the world of chemistry and beyond.”
