Have you noticed the abundance of running water around Agios Panteleimonas? This picturesque agricultural village boasts nature at its most unspoiled state. It is a place where the echoes of history blend with the tranquility of the present.

Agios Panteleimonas was built in 1923. Refugees from Prikonisos of Propontis sought a new beginning here. They brought their culture and traditions. They shaped the identity of this village.

Imagine these early settlers. They arrived with hope and resilience. They transformed this land into a thriving community. Agriculture became their main occupation. They cultivated the fertile soil. They built their homes and lives anew.

Agios Panteleimonas is home to 452 inhabitants. They continue to embrace agriculture as a way of life. The village nestles at an altitude of 120 meters. Its geographical coordinates are 40 degrees 19 minutes 34.17 seconds North latitude and 23 degrees 16 minutes 08.61 seconds East longitude.

But there is also an Agios Panteleimonas Monastery on Mount Athos. It stands as a testament to centuries of religious devotion. Founded in the early 11th century, the monastery has a rich history.

In the 13th century, the monastery faced destruction. Andronicus II Palaeologus and Serbian rulers reconstructed it. The monks, both Greek and Russian, dedicated it to Saint Panteleimon.

Inside Agios Panteleimonas Monastery, you will find sacred relics. The icons of Mary Ierosilimitida and the Baptist are highly revered. Also significant is the icon of Saint Panteleimon. Do not miss the mosaic of Alexander Nevsky.

The monastery’s library holds countless treasures. There are over 1320 Greek and 600 Slav manuscripts. It also houses 20000 Greek and Russian books.

Known also as the Russian Monastery or Rossikon, Agios Panteleimonas ranks 19th in the Athos Community. Since 1875, both Greek and Church Slavonic languages have been used here.

The monks follow the Cenobitic monastic tradition. They live together under a set of rules. The Katholikon, the main church, was built between 1812 and 1821. It is dedicated to the Patron Saint Panteleimon.

Eight domes adorn the Katholikon. Its exterior walls feature dressed stone. The Templon displays inspiration from Russian religious art.

The style resembles eastern European religious architecture. Religious icons and holy relics fill the monastery. The surrounding landscape is one of Mount Athos’s most beautiful destinations.

To visit Agios Panteleimonas Monastery, a special permission is needed. Due to Byzantine tradition, women are not allowed in most monasteries. The monastery lies 15 km from Karies, the capital of Mount Athos. It can be reached by boat, weather permitting.
