Beneath Milan’s urban sprawl lies a serene escape the Chiaravalle Abbey. Founded in 1135 by Bernard of Clairvaux it stands as one of Italy’s first Gothic architecture examples. Yet it retains late Romanesque influences too.

Imagine Cistercian monks arriving from France in 1134. The following year Bernard of Clairvaux himself came to Milan. He helped resolve a conflict between Pope Innocent II and Antipope Anacletus II. Before leaving Bernard claimed marshland to build Chiaravalle Abbey meaning clear valley in both French and Italian.

Monks cleared marshland and built irrigation systems. They transformed unusable fields into thriving farmland. These monks even invented Grana cheese the ancestor of Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano. Chiaravalle Abbey became the heart of religious and economic life.

Inside Chiaravalle you can admire Renaissance frescoes. They decorate the church’s interior. Important Italian artists created these frescoes. Stefano Fiorentino Bernardino Luini and the Fiammenghini brothers contributed. Luigi Miradori also known as il Genovesino added his touch.

Don’t miss the massive 16th-century wooden entrance door. It is inlaid with carved tiles depicting the monastery’s founders. Marvel at the monastic choir. Carlo Garavaglia carved it from walnut wood in the 1600s. It remains a place of daily devotion.

Giotto’s 14th-century fresco cycle depicts the Entombment of Mary. Bernardino Luini’s Madonna della Buonanotte showcases the Cistercians’ devotion to the Virgin Mary. The knotted marble column in the cloister marks a transition. Monks moved between work and quiet reflection.

The chapter house features sgraffiti attributed to Bramante. These depict the Duomo of Milan Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Castello Sforzesco. A fully functional water mill stands here. The medicinal herb garden displays plants for healing.

The elegant polygonal bell tower called Ciribiciaccola rises over 50 meters. Legend says its name comes from the squawking of storks nesting there. A Milanese nursery rhyme tells of the ciribiciaccola and its ciribiciaccolini. The monks still manually pull the ancient bell.

Chiaravalle Abbey played a key role in Grana Padano’s origin. Around the year 1000 the Cistercian monks created this hard cheese. They sought a way to use their excess dairy production. Today Grana Padano is world renowned.

The abbey is located within the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Hike or bike along scenic trails. Immerse yourself in the Lombardy countryside’s beauty. After your visit relax at the Abbey Refreshment House. Enjoy local products and Trappist beers.

Chiaravalle Abbey offers a tranquil escape. Its history art and peaceful atmosphere provide a unique experience. Just a short distance from Milan’s bustling city center you can find serenity and beauty at the Chiaravalle Abbey.
