Built in 1967 Kennington Methodist Church stands proudly. It’s the newest of three churches in Kennington village. This unassuming building holds a vibrant heart. It’s a hub for the community. More than just a place of worship Kennington Methodist Church is a lively space. It welcomes everyone regardless of background or belief.
Kennington Methodist Church is located on Upper Road. It’s near the village centre and Edith Court. This sheltered housing complex is adjacent to the church. The church has a small but dedicated membership of around 30 people. Services are held every Sunday at 1030 am. A quiet time of prayer precedes the service at 10 am. Holy Communion is celebrated monthly as part of the morning service. Ordained ministers and lay-people from the Oxford Methodist Circuit lead these services. There’s also a Junior Church catering for children and young people.
Evening services are held on special occasions at 630 pm. These rotate between the three village churches. This ecumenical spirit is strong among the village’s Christian communities. United services occasionally take place in the Village Centre. House groups exist in conjunction with other churches.
Kennington Methodist Church is much more than just a place of worship. It houses the Kennington Link Women’s Institute. The Kennington History Society also meets there. A Round Dance group uses the space. So too does the Kennington Trefoil Guild. The large Kennington & District United Church Choir also uses the church. This choir gives concerts throughout Oxfordshire. They raise money for local national and overseas charities. Since its formation in 1967 the choir has raised over £300000. The church even hosts a popular coffee morning. This is held on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 am. The building is a favourite venue for children’s parties.
The church’s origins are humble. It began in the homes of members in 1961. Meetings later moved to the Parish Church Hall and the Village Hall. Eventually they had the resources to build their own church in 1967. Kennington Methodist Church is small but vibrant. It has a strong musical tradition. It’s part of the Oxford Methodist Circuit. The current minister is the Reverend Rosemary Davies. She also serves churches in Headington and Horspath.
