The Oratorio di San Michele is a beautiful example of a small chapel with a big history. This little gem stands tall in the heart of Padova, Italy, a testament to faith and historical events. It’s more than just a pretty, frescoed chapel; it’s a living memory of a turbulent past. The chapel was built in 1397 by a wealthy family, Bovi, over the ruins of a much older church. This church was dedicated to the archangels even before the Lombards took over the city in 602 and declared Michael the Archangel “patron of Italy.” The Lombards rebuilt the church, much to the delight of the people, though, sadly, it was destroyed during a conflict between the Carraresi and Visconti families. You can still see traces of the original church’s nave before the chapel was built. The chapel was built as a testament to the Virgin Mary and was dedicated to her. The paintings inside are by Jacopo da Verona, an artist known for his unique style that borrows from Altichiero, Giotto, and Giusto de Menabuoi. Today, the chapel is a beautiful and serene place to visit. Take a moment to admire the frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. You may even glimpse the figures of powerful figures from the past – Petrarch, Carraresi, and Bovi himself. While admiring those, it’s fun to imagine how these figures lived hundreds of years ago, before the world changed so drastically. The Oratorio di San Michele in Padova is a reminder that even small spaces can hold great history and beauty.
