Saint Emanuel Baptist Church

Gazing upon Saint Emanuel Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. Saint Emanuel’s story begins not here, but with Mt. Ararat Baptist Church on Velasco Street in Houston. The church was organized by Reverend Charles Henry Jones and charter members of Little Zion Baptist Church (now Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church). Reverend Jones guided the congregation from 1920 to 1935. The journey of Saint Emanuel Baptist Church continued when it moved to its current location at 2318 Sampson. A significant chapter unfolded with the arrival of Reverend J. S. Brown. His church merged with Mt. Ararat, and the name was changed to Saint Emanuel Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend Brown’s leadership continued until 1946. The current building of Saint Emanuel Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring faith of its members. It was built during the pastorate of Reverend Calvin Scott Sr. Following his passing, Reverend A. C. Crawford served as interim pastor. The church then welcomed Reverend O. J. Fontenot as pastor. In 1986, Reverend Dwaine Sanders became the pastor of Saint Emanuel Baptist Church, serving until 1994. The church’s story continues to this day with the arrival of Reverend Leon D. Jackson. He was appointed overseer by Moderator M. L. Jackson of the South Texas District Association. Rev. Leon Jackson was elected pastor in 1994 and officially installed later that year. The mission of Saint Emanuel Baptist Church is deeply rooted in evangelism, both locally and globally. The church’s commitment extends to supporting the South Texas District Association Mission Service Projects. Sharing God’s laws, love, and promises is also a core part of their work within the membership, families, and the wider community. Key figures at Saint Emanuel Baptist Church include Sister Joethella Gipson, who leads the Mission Ministry. Sister Esther Scott serves the Usher Ministry. Reverend Ernest Gipson directs the Sunday School. Reverend Van C. Parks assists him. The deacons are Brother Charles Neal and Brother Tyron Harris. Sister Bernita Hagan guides New Member Orientation and the Vacation Bible School.
