It’s a vibrant hub, a testament to the power of community, and a symbol of resistance against gentrification. Mil Mundos Books opened its doors in March 2019. Founder Maria Herron envisioned a space that served the existing community. She saw how new developments were pushing out long-time residents, particularly Spanish speakers. Mil Mundos Books became a haven, offering a bilingual selection of books. Nearly half the collection is in Spanish, covering diverse genres. Everything from political and cultural works to sci-fi and speculative fiction can be found here. Mil Mundos Books prioritizes Black and Latinx heritage. This is evident in its curated selection and the events it hosts. The store’s design intentionally fosters accessibility and aspiration. It aims to counter the alienating feeling some locals experience in traditional bookstores. Mil Mundos Books has become a true community center. It offers discounted book fairs for local schools and hosts school visits. Artist talks, workshops, magazine launches, book clubs, and other gatherings create a space for connection and learning. Maria Herron’s vision extends beyond just books. She wants Mil Mundos Books to be a place for everyone, regardless of age. Mil Mundos Books is more than a business. It’s an act of defiance against the forces of displacement. It’s a place where the community can gather, learn, and celebrate their heritage.
