In 1914, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, a grand Greek Revival structure, opened its doors in Atlanta. Its prominent location, at the corner of Fifteenth and Peachtree, makes it a Midtown landmark. The First Church of Christ, Scientist stands as a testament to the healing work of Mary Baker Eddy and her students. The church’s establishment in Atlanta traces back to Julia S. Bartlett. Bartlett, one of Eddy’s students, came to Atlanta to share the teachings of Christian Science. Her arrival led to a pivotal moment when she healed Sue Harper Mims, the wife of Atlanta’s then-mayor, Livingston Mimms. This healing sparked Mims’s deep interest in Christian Science. She began hosting meetings in her home, where the Georgian Terrace Hotel now stands. The First Church of Christ, Scientist wasn’t always at its current location. The congregation originally gathered at 17 West Baker Street before moving to its grand edifice in 1914. Designed by architect Arthur Neal Robinson, a member of the church, this building boasts a unique claim to fame. It was reportedly Atlanta’s first air-conditioned building. The system, though primitive, involved fans blowing over blocks of ice placed in passages beneath the auditorium floor. Inside the First Church of Christ, Scientist, the auditorium’s design is simple yet elegant. Its soaring dome features a magnificent central chandelier, flanked by two smaller ones. The rounded pews add a touch of elegance. From the modest balcony, visitors can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the space. Twice a year, in March and September, the Board of Directors conducts a thorough examination of the entire property. This includes a visit to the copper roof, a dizzying 100 feet above the ground. The church also houses a beautifully restored Moeller Organ. Originally shipped to Europe for restoration, it now graces the front of the auditorium. The Sunday School area, located downstairs, features tailored breakout sessions for various age groups. A piece of history is preserved here. The original 19th-century reading table from the first Atlanta church building is still in use. In the downstairs foyer, exhibits showcase historical church artifacts. One notable item is the Bible used in the dedication ceremony of the current building. Adjacent to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, a former residence now serves as the Christian Science Reading Room. It provides a quiet space for study, a children’s room, and a selection of books, cards, music, and art for purchase. The First Church of Christ, Scientist is more than just an architectural marvel. It is a place where the principles of Christian Science are practiced and shared. The church welcomes all who wish to learn more about its healing doctrine and connect with the community.
