Here at the Lahug Barangay Hall, we find ourselves at a unique place. This isn’t just any barangay hall. It’s considered the only state-of-the-art barangay hall in the entire country. The Lahug Barangay Hall stands as a testament to progress.

But before this impressive structure, Lahug’s story began in a very different setting. Imagine a time long before the Spanish arrived. Lahug was a vast forestland. Insurrectors sought refuge among the heavily foliated trees. The Spaniards struggled to navigate the nearly inaccessible jungle paths. Natives, however, moved easily through the dense foliage. They went “lahug-lahug” in Cebuano. This is how the forest became known as Lahug-Lahug. Over time, the name was shortened to Lahug.

Fast forward to the 1950s. Lahug transformed from forest to fashionable residential area. An intervening businessman developed a suburban housing project. It was patterned after San Francisco’s hillside homes. It became known as The Beverly Hills of Cebu.

Lahug also played a role in air travel history. The Lahug airport once connected Cebu to Manila. It linked Cebu to other cities and provinces. In 1967, airport operations moved to Mactan Island. This was due to a bigger airstrip. It also lessened the danger of airplane crashes in the city. The Lahug Airport was only a few kilometers from downtown Cebu.

Today, Lahug is a bustling barangay. It is a key economic and social area of Cebu City. It is home to many businesses and investments. The new five-story Lahug Barangay Hall symbolizes this progress. Its blue-tinted glass facade reflects the barangay’s aspirations.

The Lahug Barangay Hall houses many important offices. There is the Office of the Barangay Captain. Also, the Office of the Sangguniang Barangay, and Sangguniang Kabataan. You’ll also find the Lupong Tagapamayapa, and a Barangay Health Center. A dental and maternity clinic operates here with in-house medical staff. A deputized Post Office and a Fire Sub-Station are also on site. The Lahug Barangay Hall features a Social Hall, Roof Deck, Tanod Headquarters, and Computer Room.

With a population of nearly 50,000 residents, Lahug has a large electorate. The barangay’s annual budget reflects its importance. Lahug is divided into numerous sitios. It has a dedicated team of barangay workers.

The Lahug Barangay Hall stands as a symbol of progress. It also shows community service. From its origins as a forest refuge to its modern status, Lahug continues to evolve. The locals believe that Lahug will easily become the future Makati of the South.
