Long ago, Pieve Emanuele was known as Pieve di Leucate. This name, meaning “land above the water,” perfectly captures its essence. Pieve Emanuele sits within the Vettabbia Fontanili Park, an area rich in springs and waterways. Imagine the scene centuries ago. The land, crisscrossed by a network of canals, bustled with agricultural activity. These waterways, essential for irrigation, nourished the fertile fields and powered numerous mills. This abundance of water wasn’t just vital for agriculture. It also laid the groundwork for the industrial development that would shape Pieve Emanuele’s future. Pieve Emanuele’s history stretches back to the 2nd century BC with Celtic-Gallic settlements. Located south of Milan and north of Pavia, it shared the historical tapestry of the Lombard region. It evolved from a rural village to an industrial hub. The present-day Basilica of Saint Alessandro stands as a testament to its rich religious history. Built between 1296 and 1308, this Romanesque church replaced an earlier structure. Its three naves, a prominent feature, were created by knocking down the side walls of the original building. Even St. Charles Borromeo visited this very church in 1573. Traces of his visit are preserved within its walls. Inside, you can find a notable painting of St. Alexander, depicted as a Roman soldier carrying a banner with a white lily. Another landmark, the 16th-century Tolcinasco Castle, stands as a unique example of an “agricultural castle” in Lombardy. Built by the D’Adda family, it initially served as a granary. Its large archway allowed carts to enter and store grain on the upper floor. The sloping floor facilitated the flow of grain downwards. Now, the castle has been transformed into a charming hotel with an adjacent golf course, replacing what were once agricultural fields. Pieve Emanuele isn’t just history. The arrival of the railway station in 2013 further cemented its connection with surrounding cities. Today, Pieve Emanuele thrives as a blend of history and modernity.
