Did you know that the Asilo de la Milagrosa has been a beacon of hope in Cebu City since the 1940s? It stands as a testament to faith and charity. We are standing before a place with a rich history. It’s more than just a building. The Asilo de la Milagrosa is a sanctuary.

The story of the Asilo de la Milagrosa begins with five dedicated women. These alumnae of Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion wanted to help the poor. Doña Esperanza de Velez and her companions formed the Conferencias de San Vicente de Paul. Their goal was to establish an institution for those in need.

Guided by Rev. Fr. Jose Garcia and the Daughters of Charity, they started small. Initially, they cared for twelve paralytic and blind individuals. Soon, they extended their care to abandoned babies and orphans. The Asilo de la Milagrosa embraced the disadvantaged from Cebu City and neighboring towns.

Don Ramon Aboitiz and other generous benefactors helped construct a building. This provided a home for the Asilo’s beneficiaries. The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul own and administer the Asilo de la Milagrosa to this day.

The Asilo de la Milagrosa continues to evolve. Today, it runs a Child and Youth Welfare Program. This program supports children and youth from zero to 18 years old. These children are orphaned, abandoned, or in difficult situations. The Asilo offers them care, protection, and empowerment.

The Asilo de la Milagrosa church itself was built in the 1950s. It is considered a regional historic landmark. Notice the Gothic influences in its stained-glass lancet windows. The Asilo also features a garden plaza. Inside, you’ll find a charity home for the elderly and orphans.

In 2009, the Asilo de la Milagrosa celebrated its 75th anniversary. Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal led a Pontifical Mass. He emphasized the importance of Christian faith combined with service to the less privileged.

The Asilo has faced challenges. In the past, there were concerns about a flyover obstructing the view of the Asilo. Citizens and heritage advocates rallied to protect this important landmark. They understood its heritage value.

The Asilo de la Milagrosa also holds a special feast for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal every year from November 17 to 28. Marian devotees flock to the church during this time.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal at Asilo de la Milagrosa holds regular mass. You can attend services throughout the week. They have daily masses at 6:00 AM and additional masses on Sundays.

The Asilo de la Milagrosa stands as a symbol of enduring charity. It exemplifies how faith and community can create a haven for those in need. Its history is woven into the fabric of Cebu City. The Asilo remains a place of hope and healing for generations to come.
