Hidden behind the Kasbah Mosque lies a secret. A secret whispered through time. The Saadian Tombs.

This magnificent necropolis is more than just a resting place for royalty. It’s a testament to the Saadian dynasty’s power and artistic prowess. Built in the late 16th century it’s a captivating blend of history and artistry.

The Saadian Tombs weren’t always so grand. Initially a simple square chamber it began as a mausoleum for Sultan Muhammad al-Shaykh the dynasty’s founder. His son Abdallah al-Ghalib added to the complex. He added a mausoleum for his father. He also added his own tomb in 1574.

The most significant expansion occurred under Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. Al-Mansur was the most powerful Saadian sultan. He expanded the existing mausoleum adding elegant loggia rooms. He also built a larger chamber. This grand chamber was possibly intended for his own tomb.

Al-Mansur later constructed a stunning new building to the west. This structure showcases the peak of Saadian architecture. It contains three chambers. The Chamber of the Mihrab the Chamber of the Twelve Columns and the Chamber of the Three Niches. Al-Mansur’s own opulent tomb is in the Chamber of the Twelve Columns. It’s surrounded by the tombs of his family members. The intricately carved Carrara marble tombstones are especially impressive.

But the story doesn’t end with the Saadians. The tombs continued to be used as a burial site. Even the Alawi dynasty added tombs in the complex. It is said they eventually sealed off the tombs. This hidden location kept them safe for centuries.

The Saadian Tombs weren’t rediscovered until 1917. The Service des Beaux-Arts meticulously restored the tombs. The restoration was careful and detailed. They opened the site to the public. Today visitors from around the world marvel at the stunning craftsmanship. They witness the rich history contained within these walls.

The Saadian Tombs stand as a powerful symbol. They are a symbol of a glorious past. They are a symbol of artistic achievement. They are a symbol of enduring legacy. They also endured through the September 2023 earthquake. While surrounding structures suffered damage the tombs themselves remained largely intact. The Saadian Tombs stand strong a testament to the skill of those who built them. They stand as a testament to the endurance of history itself. So step inside and let the story of the Saadian Tombs transport you through time.
