Journey back in time with me, to the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Wat Pho En, one of Bangkok’s oldest temples, patiently awaits our exploration. It predates Bangkok’s establishment as the capital. Initially a modest structure known as Wat Photharam, Wat Pho En witnessed the rise and fall of kingdoms. It saw the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 and the subsequent shift of the capital to Thonburi. Later, it observed the establishment of Bangkok as the new capital by King Rama I in 1782. Wat Pho En’s close proximity to the royal palace elevated its status to a royal monastery.

King Rama I recognized the historical significance of Wat Pho En. In 1788, he embarked on an ambitious renovation project. He transformed the dilapidated temple into a grand complex. This was no mere restoration. It was a symbolic act, reflecting the new capital’s embrace of tradition and spirituality. Rama I further enriched Wat Pho En by bringing in Buddha statues from ruined temples across the country, creating a remarkable collection.

Wat Pho En continued to evolve under subsequent rulers. King Rama III, between 1832 and 1848, doubled the temple’s size. He established it as a center of learning. He commissioned the engraving of stone inscriptions on the temple walls. These inscriptions covered diverse subjects. Traditional Thai medicine, massage, astrology, literature, history, and Buddhist teachings were all documented. This transformed Wat Pho En into a repository of knowledge, a living testament to Thailand’s intellectual heritage.

Wat Pho En is not just a historical site. It is also recognized as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. King Rama III’s promotion of traditional medicine and massage led to the establishment of a massage school within the temple grounds. This tradition continues to this day. Visitors can still experience authentic Thai massage from practitioners trained in the ancient techniques.

The temple’s journey through time has been one of continuous evolution and adaptation. Conservation efforts in the 20th century ensured the preservation of its historical structures, murals, and statues. Wat Pho En’s role as a center of traditional Thai knowledge was further recognized in 2008. Its stone inscriptions earned it a place on UNESCO’s Memory of the World register. Wat Pho En continues to thrive as a vibrant religious site. It is an educational center and a popular tourist destination, attracting millions each year. Its enduring legacy is a testament to the vision of the early Chakri kings. They transformed an ancient temple into a beacon of learning, culture, and spirituality. It shines brightly in modern-day Bangkok.
