In 1902, a Catholic elementary school emerged on Bonifatiusplatz in Hanover’s List district. This was the seed that would eventually blossom into the Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule we stand before today. Fast forward to 1977. The upper grades of the Bonifatiusschule branched off, relocating to this very spot on Altenbekener Damm. They formed a new entity, christened the Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule, in honor of the prominent German politician. The Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule holds a unique position in Hanover’s educational landscape. It stands as the first and only Oberschule in the city, a type of secondary school that combines different academic tracks. It also holds the distinction of being the sole Catholic school in the entire Hanover region. The school transitioned to this Oberschule model, incorporating a Gymnasium track, starting in the 2014/2015 school year. Imagine a school where students of all abilities learn together. At Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule, this vision becomes reality. The school fosters an inclusive environment where students from varying academic backgrounds share classrooms. They learn and grow together. As part of its diverse offerings, the Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule provides specialized “Neigungsklassen,” or elective classes, catering to different interests. Students can explore their passions in areas like music, science, sports, art, and theater. Future plans even include technology and European studies. Led by Headmistress Heike Braun, the Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule boasts a vibrant student body of around 800 pupils, guided by nearly 90 dedicated teachers. The school embraces the motto “I will give you a future and a hope” from the Book of Jeremiah. This motto underscores the school’s dedication to nurturing its students and preparing them for a bright future. The Ludwig-Windthorst-Schule’s commitment to holistic education extends beyond academics. The school has earned accolades such as “starke Schule” for career preparation and “sportfreundliche Schule” for its promotion of athletics. It also holds the title of “Europaschule,” reflecting its international perspective.
