Let’s step back in time. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has deep roots. Spanish missionaries arrived in the late 1600s and 1700s. They explored the region. Fray Junípero Serra led the establishment of early missions.

In 1781, El Pueblo del Rio de Porciuncula was established. It is now Alameda Street in downtown Los Angeles. This early community was diverse. It included indigenous, black, Latino, and multicultural backgrounds.

The origins of the Archdiocese trace back to 1681. There was a dispute over spiritual jurisdiction. The bishops of Guadalajara and Durango both claimed authority. Eventually, the bishop of Guadalajara was assigned jurisdiction.

In 1760, the idea of advancing northwestern New Spain to diocesan status was suggested. In 1779, Pope Pius VI created the Diocese of Sonora. It included provinces like Sonora, Sinaloa, and both Californias. For the first time, Alta California was included in a papal designation.

Various plans unfolded until 1840. The Diocese of Both Californias was established. It covered Baja Peninsular California and Alta California. In 1848, Alta California was ceded to the United States. The diocesan name changed to the Diocese of Monterey in 1849.

In 1853, Bishop Joseph Alemany learned that Baja Peninsular California had been removed from the Diocese of Monterey. Pope Pius IX created a Metropolitan District in San Francisco. In 1859, the episcopal seat moved to Los Angeles. The diocese was renamed the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles.

In 1922, Bishop John Cantwell requested a reconfiguration. The Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles was vast. In June 1922, the new Diocese of Monterey-Fresno was formed. The southern counties became the Diocese of Los Angeles-San Diego.

In July 1936, a second Metropolitan District was established in Los Angeles. The four southernmost counties became the Diocese of San Diego. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles included Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties.

In January 1948, the jurisdiction was officially named the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in California. Bishop Cantwell became the first archbishop. In 1976, Orange County separated. It became the Diocese of Orange.

Today, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles includes Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. The Archbishop of Los Angeles serves as the metropolitan.
