“Have you ever heard of a church that boasts of its ‘assymetry’?” I ask, gesturing towards Saint Joseph the Worker Parish Church in Danao City. It’s not your typical ornate church. In fact, its charm lies in its unique blend of dissimilar surfaces, linear designs, and intriguing slit openings. Saint Joseph the Worker Parish Church was founded in 1961. The bell tower, standing proudly on the epistle flank, displays a massive concrete cross amidst glass windows. The facade is surprisingly sparse. It features a rectangular portico at the entrance, reached by a curved staircase. Look closely above the portico’s roof. You’ll see a statue of St. Joseph himself, cradling the Holy Child. The pediment is adorned with recessed sections, creating a stippled drywall texture. A simple, bare church wall on the gospel flank completes the facade. Every May 1st, the community gathers to celebrate the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker. It’s a vibrant celebration of faith and community, honoring the patron saint of this unique and understated church.
