Established in 1854 Lexington High School stands proudly before you. Its history is rich and vibrant. It wasn’t always located here on Waltham Street. The first Lexington High School opened in a repurposed building. This building served as the town hall. It only accommodated 30 students. Conditions were far from ideal. The building had windows on only one side. One stove struggled to heat the entire room.

Lexington High School grew. In 1901 the town allocated $55000 for a new high school. The old town hall was sold. Interestingly its pillars and columns were salvaged. They were reused in the new high school’s entrances. This building later became Muzzy Junior High. Now it’s Muzzy Condominiums.

Today Lexington High School boasts a large campus. It includes a central quadrangle. There are four main academic buildings. These cover Arts Humanities World Language Mathematics and Science. The school also has a field house and modular classrooms. However the current buildings face challenges. They lack space have aging construction and suffer from congestion. Many classrooms don’t meet Massachusetts standards for square footage.

The school has a thriving academic community. In the 2023-24 school year Lexington High School enrolled 2318 students. With almost 185 teachers the student to teacher ratio was approximately 12 to 1. The school also stands out academically. It achieved national recognition. In 2021 US News ranked it among the top public high schools in Massachusetts. The school’s chess team also achieved state championship titles. Moreover Lexington High School shines in science competitions. They won the National Science Bowl multiple times. They also conquered the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
