Emerging from the bustling city, the Escultura Abstracta Sculpture stands as a testament to Spain’s abstract art movement. The Escultura Abstracta Sculpture, located on Paseo de la Castellana, is more than just a collection of sculptures. It’s an open-air museum, a unique urban setting where art interacts with everyday life. The museum opened in 1972. It aimed to revitalize an underpass, transforming it into a space for the public to appreciate Spanish abstract art. The engineers, José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez and Julio Martínez Calzón, collaborated with the artist Eusebio Sempere to design this space. Their vision was to integrate art seamlessly into the urban fabric. The Escultura Abstracta Sculpture showcases a diverse collection of abstract sculptures by Spanish artists. It represents two generations of the Spanish avant-garde. The “historic avant-garde” of the 1920s and 30s, and the generation of the 50s, who inherited the avant-garde spirit. One of the highlights is Eduardo Chillida’s “The Stranded Mermaid”, a massive sculpture suspended from the overpass. It’s a striking example of how the museum incorporates functional elements, like the bridge itself, into the art display. The Escultura Abstracta Sculpture isn’t confined to a traditional building. It’s woven into the city’s infrastructure, inviting passersby to engage with art in their daily lives. The museum occupies a significant area of over 4,200 square meters. It extends under the overpass and includes landscaped areas. The layout is structured on three levels, gently sloping down from Serrano Street to Paseo de la Castellana. This design accommodates the uneven terrain and creates a dynamic flow through the museum. The Escultura Abstracta Sculpture offers a captivating blend of art and urban design. It’s a testament to the power of art to transform public spaces and enrich the lives of those who experience it.
