Established in 1906, Stormarnschule started as a private school for girls. This was in response to the growing community of affluent families. The families were drawn to Ahrensburg after the Hamburg-Lübeck railway line opened. Can you imagine those early days? The school initially operated from a rented house on Bismarckallee. Then in 1910, construction began on a striking new building on Waldstraße. Stormarnschule moved into its new home in 1911. This marked a new chapter for the school. In 1927, Stormarnschule transitioned from a private institution to a public one under the Ahrensburg municipality. The school’s name, Stormarnschule, became official during this time. The mid-1930s saw Stormarnschule’s transformation into a Gymnasium. The first Abitur exams were held in 1944. Since then, over 4,000 students have graduated from Stormarnschule. The school’s history is intertwined with significant events. Both the Nazi era and World War II disrupted operations. Students were pulled from their studies to contribute to war efforts. This included working for Nazi youth organizations, farms, and as air raid helpers. At one point, the school had to close due to coal shortages. The gymnasium was even repurposed as a grain store. In 1943, part of the Stormarn district administration moved into the school building, scattering classes to various locations outside the school. In 1945, the building served as a military hospital. Normal school operations only resumed in January 1946. As Ahrensburg grew, so did Stormarnschule’s student population. This led to several expansions in 1951, 1958, 1969, and 1984. To accommodate the increasing numbers, new schools were established. These included Gymnasium Großhansdorf in 1967, Kreisgymnasium in Bargteheide in 1972, and Gymnasium Am Heimgarten in Ahrensburg in 1973. In 1963, a dedicated sports field was created behind Stormarnschule. In 1984, the Eduard-Söring-Saal, a hall with special acoustics for orchestral performances, was built. A three-field sports hall was added in 1996. A cafeteria opened in 2011 to provide meals for students participating in all-day classes. Today, Stormarnschule is known for its focus on music and intercultural education. Since the 1960s, orchestras and choirs for all age groups and skill levels have been established. These include the Ahrensburg Youth Symphony Orchestra. A dedicated music branch was introduced in 1995. This offers specialized training to musically gifted students. The school’s intercultural program includes various exchange programs. Bilingual classes started in 2002. The AbiBac program, launched in 2011, allows students to earn both a German Abitur and a French baccalauréat. Stormarnschule is more than just a school. It is a testament to community effort, resilience, and a dedication to providing a well-rounded education. It has evolved with the changing times while staying true to its core values.
