“Did you know that the Saint Michael Chapel in Argao, Cebu began as a mission village in 1608? It operated under the advocation of San Miguel Arcangel.” That’s right. We are standing before a testament to centuries of faith and history.

Today we explore the captivating story of the Saint Michael Chapel. This house of worship stands as a proud emblem of Cebu’s rich religious heritage.

The town of Argao is more than just its famous torta or tableya. It is a heritage frontier of Cebu province. The centuries-old Saint Michael Chapel is a witness to this history. Father Ignacio de Olalde was the first parish priest. He initiated the building of Argao’s first church dedicated to San Miguel Arcangel. This construction began between 1735 and 1740. Laborers and artisans used locally sourced materials. These included coral stone and hardwood. The initial church construction concluded by 1788.

Father Mateo Perez initiated rebuilding and redesigning the church in 1803. This was completed in 1836. Bishop Santos-Gomez MaraƱon later added the belfry in 1830. The belfry has a square base. It connects to the church through a baptistery. A large bell resides on the second level. Eight smaller bells occupy the third floor. Also, a clock faces the front of the Saint Michael Chapel.

Note the facade. It features bas-reliefs. These depict Augustinian symbols. You can see flowers, St. Michael, and other angels. Saint Michael Chapel is unique in this aspect. No other churches built in southern Cebu have it.

Look towards the Capilla Mortuario. It stands a few meters from the church. Its pediment displays carvings. These include a skull and bone, angels, and humans. This mortuary chapel once served multiple purposes. It was a leprosarium. It even became a morgue during the Philippine-American War.

Let’s talk about the interior. The church’s pipe organ has a fascinating history. Augustinian Recollect Friar Diego Cera directed its construction around 1816. It underwent restoration from 2015 to 2017. This restoration was done by Diego Cera Organbuilders Inc.

Also notice the murals. The church’s ceiling showcases the work of renowned Cebuano muralists Raymundo Francia and Canuto Avila. They completed these paintings in 1924.

In 1876 a typhoon destroyed the church and convent. Renovations and enlargement happened in 1904. Another major renovation occurred from 1987 to 1988 for the church’s 200th anniversary. The church underwent reconstruction because of the 2013 earthquake.

Saint Michael Chapel stands not only as a place of worship. It is a symbol of Argao’s enduring spirit. It is a blend of history, art, and faith. The Saint Michael Chapel in Argao is a must-visit for anyone seeking to connect with Cebu’s vibrant past.
