The name itself, “Phung Island,” or “Phoenix Island,” as many call it, sparks a sense of wonder, doesn’t it? It’s a place where the past intertwines with the present, where the spirit of the phoenix rises from the banks of the Mekong. Imagine stepping onto Phung Island. You’re surrounded by the soft scent of coconut and the gentle breeze carrying the whispers of the river. This place is a hidden gem of the Mekong Delta, a land of lush fruit orchards, emerald coconut groves, and a history that still resonates today.

But Phung Island wasn’t always a place of serene beauty. In the 1930s, it started as a small, floating island, no bigger than 28 hectares. Over time, the river’s natural sediment deposition, like layers of ancient memories, helped it flourish and grow to more than 50 hectares. And as life blossomed on this island, a story unfolded.

During the early 20th century, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, a man of vision, came to Phung Island. It was here he built the magnificent Nam Quoc Phat Pagoda, a symbol of peace and resilience, and founded the Dao Dua religious sect. While constructing the pagoda, workers unearthed an ancient bowl, its shape reminiscent of a phoenix. This discovery gave the island its name and resonated with the spirit of the phoenix, symbolizing rebirth and renewal.

Phung Island offers a captivating journey for those who seek to immerse themselves in the heart of the Mekong Delta. Take a stroll along the palm-lined paths. Hop aboard a traditional sampan, gliding through the canals, feeling the cool water lapping against the hull. Don’t be surprised if you hear a gentle “don ca tai tu” drift through the air – music that has graced these water channels for generations. And if you find a local bee farm, linger a while. The honey produced in this area is often the sweetest in the region, a gift from the flowers of the delta. This peaceful island with a vibrant history is a reminder: even from the most humble beginnings, beauty and wonder can emerge.
