A hushed reverence hangs in the air. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel in Minglanilla Cebu stands before you a testament to faith and history.
This isn’t just any chapel. It’s the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Immaculate Heart of Mary also known as Purisimo Corazon De Santa Maria Parish or simply Minglanilla Church. Its story begins long before its construction in 1880.
Imagine the coastal town of Minglanilla then called Buat. Fisherfolk dominated this area. The name Buat likely derived from the local term for salted dried fish. Augustinian friar Father Fernando Sanchez later renamed it Minglanilla. He also played a significant role in establishing the parish on October 30 1857. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel became the heart of this community.
The chapel’s Gothic architecture is captivating. Notice the vaulted ceiling of the portico supported by Ionic columns. The entrance door a striking arch features a keystone with a seal. Ornate pilasters and rose windows add to its grandeur. The pediment above the doorway displays a statue its outline embellished with intricate cornices and pinnacles.
Construction lasted until 1886. Father Nicolas Lopez started the building process. Father Juan Alonso oversaw its completion. The chapel underwent renovations over the years. Its exterior has changed significantly from the 1930s. Additions include the entrance porch the upper story of the bell towers and structures extending from the sides.
On August 23 2007 Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal officially proclaimed it an archdiocesan shrine. This elevated its status significantly. It remains the Philippines’ only shrine dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The annual fiesta celebrating the Immaculate Heart of Mary takes place every August 22. The Sugat-Kabanhawan Festival another significant event celebrates the meeting of the risen Christ and the Virgin Mary on Easter Sunday. It features street dancing and various festivities outside the chapel.
