Established in 1592 by Nichiko Shonin Myōkoku-ji is a head temple of the Nichiren sect. Its history is deeply entwined with Osaka’s tumultuous past. Imagine the flames engulfing the temple in 1615. Toyotomi forces destroyed it believing Tokugawa Ieyasu hid within.

Myōkoku-ji’s most intriguing feature is its ancient cycad tree. This 1100-year-old marvel holds a unique story. Oda Nobunaga transplanted it to Azuchi Castle. A strange voice however demanded its return. The tree seemingly bled when cut down. Even Nobunaga feared its power. He returned it to Myōkoku-ji.

Nichiko Shonin’s prayers for the dying cycad led to a divine dream. A god with a man’s face and a snake’s body appeared. He promised to ease childbirth suffering and poverty. The god Ugatoku-ryujin became the temple’s guardian. In 1923 the cycad became a national natural monument.

Myōkoku-ji also witnessed the tragic Sakai Incident in 1868. French sailors caused a disturbance. Tosa clan samurai reacted violently killing thirteen Frenchmen. France demanded compensation. Eleven samurai performed seppuku at Myōkoku-ji. The remaining nine were exiled. Their graves however lie at nearby Hojuin Temple. Myōkoku-ji’s sacred status prevented their burial on temple grounds.

Myōkoku-ji Temple a place of worship and resilience. It stands as a silent observer of history. This temple whispers stories of war peace and the mystical power of nature. Its enduring legacy continues to fascinate and inspire. Remember the cycad the samurai and the unwavering spirit of Myōkoku-ji.
