Santo Rosario Church

Beneath the vibrant tapestry of Cebu City’s history lies the Santo Rosario Church. It stands as a quiet testament to faith and resilience. The Santo Rosario Church wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. It began humbly as a chapel serving the Sto. Rosario Ladies Dormitory. Its patron, Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, watched over its growth. A key figure in the church’s story is Msgr. Jose Ma. Cuenco. He was instrumental in its construction and became its first parish priest in February 1933. The original building was concrete, with a main altar carved from exquisite Philippine hardwood. During the tumultuous years of World War II and the Japanese occupation, the Santo Rosario Church provided spiritual refuge. The church was led by Very Reverend Ernest Hoerdemann, a German SVD priest attached to Colegio da San Carlos. He was followed by a succession of dedicated priests: Rev. Fr. Thomas Villamor, Rev. Fr. Cesar J. Alcoseba, and Msgr. Esteban Montecillo. When Archbishop Julio R. Rosales was installed as Archbishop of Cebu in 1949, Santo Rosario was elevated to Pro-Cathedral status. It served this role until July 1951 while the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral was being rebuilt after wartime destruction. Msgr. Montecillo served Santo Rosario for an impressive 22 years before retiring in 1972. The church then saw leadership from Bishop Nicolas Mondejar, followed by Rev. Fr. Esteban S. Binghay. In 1976, Right Reverend Frederick Kriekenbeek became the parish priest, a role he held until 1987. A pivotal moment in the church’s history came in 1978. After much prayer and reflection, the decision was made to demolish the old structure and build anew. The entire parish community rallied to raise funds, and within ten months, a testament to their generosity and faith, the new Santo Rosario Church was completed. Cardinal Julio R. Rosales blessed the new building in June 1979, coinciding with his Silver Jubilee celebration. Msgr. Kriekenbeek also played a significant role in fostering the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement during his tenure. From 1987 to 1998, Right Reverend Esteban S. Binghay served as parish priest. He oversaw numerous improvements and changes, enhancing the church’s service to its parishioners. Santo Rosario Church also participated in Cardinal Vidal’s pilot program for a new parish management system, the Parish Team Ministry. The church has seen further renovations and expansions over the years, including the addition of the Beato Pedro Calungsod Hall. Today, the Santo Rosario Church continues to serve as a vibrant center of faith and community in Cebu City.
