Legend whispers of a humble chicken trapper Ricardo Ramirez who stumbled upon the cave in the early 18th century. He discovered a remarkable sight a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe nestled within the natural rock formations. Water trickled from the cave’s ceiling forming a natural basin beside the image. This discovery sparked a wave of devotion.
The original image was eventually moved to the larger Guadalupe Church. However a replica remains within the cave’s humble chamber. Devotees still flock to this spot believing the cave’s water possesses healing powers. Father Romeo Desuyo a priest who cares for the shrine emphasizes it’s not the water itself but faith that heals.
The cave has witnessed significant moments in Cebu’s history. During a devastating cholera epidemic in 1902 the statue was carried in processions. The epidemic subsided. This event solidified the cave’s status as a sacred site. The statue’s journey also includes a fascinating event. While being transported back to its original location it mysteriously fell and stood upright facing the cave shrine. This prompted the permanent enshrinement in Guadalupe.
The statue itself is a unique piece. Contrary to previous claims it wasn’t brought by Magellan. Father Desuyo clarifies it was locally carved. It’s a stunning example of Filipino artistry. The design reflects the Immaculate Conception. It has a crescent moon at its feet and three cherubs representing faith hope and love. Today Guadalupe Cave remains a living testament to faith. It offers a tranquil escape from Cebu City’s vibrant energy. Two masses are held every Saturday and Sunday. Healing masses are held every first Saturday.
