Established in 1964, the University of Cebu, or UC as it’s affectionately known, has a rich history. It began as the Cebu College of Commerce. A small group of visionaries, led by lawyer Augusto W. Go, dreamt of an institution that would empower students through education. The University of Cebu started with just a handful of students. The initial offerings were focused on commerce, reflecting the city’s growing economic dynamism. Over time, the college grew. It expanded its programs. It changed its name to Cebu Central Colleges. Eventually, it achieved university status, becoming the University of Cebu we know today. The University of Cebu is recognized by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACU-COA). It boasts a vibrant student body of over 60,000. UC’s main campus is located along Sanciangko Street. It also has campuses in Banilad, Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, and Mambaling. The University of Cebu has also made a name for itself in athletics. As a member of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI), UC’s Webmasters basketball team achieved a historic win in 2010. They became the first team other than the University of Visayas to win the CESAFI basketball championship. They even defended their title the following year. UC has seen success in other sports too, including football, taekwondo, dancesport, weightlifting, swimming, and beach volleyball. One of its athletes, Elreen Ando, even represented the Philippines in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. From its humble beginnings, the University of Cebu has become a significant institution. It provides accessible and quality education to generations of Filipinos.
