How about stepping back in time with me? We are standing before Nhà thờ An Thái. It is a hidden gem in Hanoi. Some call it Nhà thờ Kẻ Bưởi. This name links it to its location. It is near the Kẻ Bưởi area south of West Lake.

Nhà thờ An Thái is one of Hanoi’s ancient churches. It has maintained its original architecture. The church’s construction dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was built on An Thái village land.

This church nestles in a narrow alley at 460 Thụy Khuê. It showcases unique features of Hanoi. Older members of the parish say it was built between 1893 and 1907.

Note the architecture. Nhà thờ An Thái embraces the Renaissance style. Its decorative details are delicate. The church may be small but it exudes solidity and solemnity.

Look at the front of Nhà thờ An Thái. You will see a Latin inscription. It reads “Mater Dolorosa ora pro nobis”. This translates to “Mother of Sorrows pray for us”.

The churchyard is quite small. It sits amid a densely populated residential area. Corresponding to the church’s modest size, An Thái parish has the fewest members in the Hanoi Diocese. Despite its size, Nhà thờ An Thái still holds services every day. Sunday and major holiday services draw crowds. Many attendees are students, migrants and workers from other parishes.

Despite the passage of time, Nhà thờ An Thái retains a harmonious presence. The architecture of Nhà thờ An Thái blends well with the surrounding space.
