Whispers of history linger in Reeders Moor. This isn’t just any moor. It’s a significant part of Hamburg’s story. Located in the Eppendorf district Reeders Moor is a surprisingly large inner-city moor. In fact it’s Europe’s largest.

Reeders Moor’s history stretches back to the Ice Age. Its formation occurred on a river terrace. The flat land with raised bog remnants shows what was once extensive wetland. The Alster valley was once much wetter than today.

Medieval times brought change. Urbanization led to drainage and peat extraction. Biologically rich areas were lost. Land was needed for building and farming. By 1862 part of Reeders Moor became a shooting range. This impacted the moor introducing trees to the treeless area.

The 19th century saw more transformation. Eppendorf became fashionable. Affluent residents built on the once marshy land. Despite this development Reeders Moor survived. Its unique ecosystem was protected in 1982. It’s a testament to Hamburg’s commitment to nature.

World War II left its mark. Fuel shortages led to deforestation. The birch forest was almost completely felled. This allowed moor plants to reappear. Later reforestation efforts prevented the area from being filled with rubble. The construction of Alsterkrugchaussee lowered the water table again impacting the plants.

Today Reeders Moor is a nature reserve. It was expanded in 2015 showing continued protection. It’s a haven for biodiversity. Kingfishers glide by. Little grebes are seen in the water. Buzzards and hawks circle overhead. Reed beds and pipe grass thrive here. Reeders Moor offers a quiet escape in a bustling city. It shows Hamburg’s dedication to environmental protection. Reeders Moor stands as a reminder of Hamburg’s past. It’s a valuable green space for the future.
