What if these walls could talk? Here at Museo Sugbo, they whisper tales of centuries past. Museo Sugbo isn’t just a museum; it’s a time capsule. Housed in the former Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, once known as Carcel de Cebu, this building has witnessed a dramatic sweep of history. Designed in 1869 by Domingo de Escondrillas, Cebu’s sole architect at the time, the Carcel was initially envisioned as the main prison for the entire Visayas District. Its imposing size reflects this grand ambition. Construction began around 1871, and it’s believed that coral blocks from the demolished Parian Church were used in its construction, adding another layer of historical significance to Museo Sugbo. Over its 135-year history as a prison, its walls held more than just common criminals. During the Philippine Revolution, Katipuneros were imprisoned here without trial, many meeting their tragic end in the nearby Carreta Cemetery. In the early American period, the Carcel served a surprising purpose, becoming a stable for horses competing at the Hipodromo racetrack. It later returned to its role as a prison for both the city and province. During World War II, guerrillas captured by the Kempei-Tei, the Japanese secret police, were held and tortured within these walls. After the war, collaborators also faced imprisonment here. The building’s name evolved over time, from Cebu Provincial Jail during the American and post-war periods, to Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) in the 1980s. In 2004, the CPDRC moved to a new location, and the old Carcel found new life as Museo Sugbo, a repository of Cebuano heritage. Within its fourteen galleries, artifacts and memorabilia paint a vivid picture of Cebu’s past, from pre-colonial times to the Spanish period, the American era, and beyond. Today, visitors can explore these galleries, paying a small entrance fee that contributes to the museum’s upkeep. As you wander through the exhibits, imagine the echoes of those who walked these halls before – revolutionaries, prisoners of war, and ordinary citizens caught in extraordinary circumstances. Museo Sugbo offers a poignant reminder of Cebu’s resilience and rich history, inviting you to connect with the past in a tangible and unforgettable way.
